The Health and Wellness committee continually strives to create programs, promote healthy choices, encourage physical activity, and seeks to be a leader in the community. With this mindset, the committee has achieved several awards and grants to help further the programs offered at Lead Mine Elementary.

2018-2019 National Healthy Schools Silver Award
Lead Mine Elementary has been recognized as one of the Healthiest School's in America by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Lead Mine was one of two Wake County schools to be named to this list of four hundred and seventeen. This award centers around the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s six core competencies of School Health and Safety Policies, Health Education, Physical Education, Nutrition Services, Health Promotion, and Family and Community Involvement.

2018 Brains and Bodies Silver Award
Lead Mine continues the focus on providing a healthy learning environment for Lead Mine Elementary. The AHA Brains and Bodies Award recognizes schools in Wake County that are creating a culture of wellness in an ongoing and sustainable way. Utilizing the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program, schools complete the following 3 assessment modules and an Action Plan for each to be eligible for AHA’s award:

2018 Sneakers and Spokes Award
For the third year in a row, our school has won the Sneakers and Spokes award. AHA recognizes and rewards schools that excel in walk/bike to/at school activities with the AHA Sneakers and Spokes Award. Walking/biking to school helps children and adolescents reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Plus, research shows that active children learn better and have fewer discipline issues at school.
Lead Mine achieved this award for the the Fitness Friday and Walk to School programs. |

2017 Let's Move Active Schools National Award
Lead Mine continues to make strides in Health and Wellness. The Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award is the nation’s top physical education and physical activity distinction for K-12 schools. The award celebrates a school’s commitment to providing students with at least 60 minutes of physical education and physical activity before, during and after school each day. To earn a Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award, a school must have met significant benchmarks in five areas: physical education; physical activity before and after school; physical activity during school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement.

2017 Whole Foods Grant
Lead Mine obtained a grant from the Whole Foods Foundation. The US Gardens Grant Program was created in partnership with FoodCorps. The Garden Grant program provides a $2,000 monetary grant to support a new or existing edible garden. Find out more!
